Ceramics - Burnished ware

Using hand building techniques I explore a wide range of clays and respond to surface and form. The natural burnished finish is achieved by using a number of different sized and shaped spoons - a very therapeutic and satisfying process. You have to catch the clay at just the right moment to achieve the overall 'polished' finish.

Responses to pod forms gradually grew into the 'Talking Head' and 'Mother and Child' series, followed by larger sculptural pieces. In addition smaller more intricate works have been developed alongside.

Black earthenware clay is ideally suited to the figurative responses and the burnishing process, which results in a granite like finish; while the addition of a clear glaze will result in a jet black colour
